Marland Backus devotes her days off and long flights between modeling jobs to beading name necklaces and carving earrings that mirror matchsticks. For Backus—who’s walked for Balenciaga and Burberry, and been photographed for W and British Vogue—the passion beyond posing is industrial design. The Pratt Institute graduate is currently focused on creating jewelry from metal, wood, and human hair. In fact, Backus has been getting so many requests from stylists for her jewelry that she’s enlisted her mom to help pick up and drop off orders. “I think the piece that most defines me is my pearl necklace with tangled hair,” Backus says. “A little bit glam and a little bit gross."
